In Case You Missed It: Cops Accused of Rape

Two police officers have been accused of raping women after responding to 911 calls.

Officer Geoffrey Graves, a San Jose police officer, and Officer Deon Nunlee, a Detroit police officer, have both been accused of raping women after they called 911.

Graves  has been charged with forcible rape.

The woman called 911, seeking help from police after reportedly being assaulted by her boyfriend. But while police responded to the domestic violence call, one of the officers allegedly took the woman into an upstairs bedroom and sexually assaulted her, authorities said.

The victim was escorted to a hotel where she worked after the police responded to her 911 call about domestic violence. After checking in to her room, she heard knocking on her door and answered:

“The defendant entered the room, grabbed the victim forcibly and pushed her onto the bed,” Sgt. Craig Storlie, a San Jose police internal affairs investigator, wrote in an affidavit.

Graves then “took off parts of his uniform with the exception of his bulletproof vest,” climbed on top of the struggling woman and raped her, Storlie wrote.

The woman reported the incident in October, prompting an investigation by San Jose police. “Physical evidence corroborates the victim’s allegations,” and the woman identified Graves as the attacker, prosecutors said.

Graves is currently on paid administrative leave and his police department urges that this is an isolated incident and does not reflect the department itself.

Officer Deon Nunlee

The second case, from Officer Deon Nunlee, is quite similar to Graves’s case. Both officers were on duty at the time of the rape and both had responded to 911 calls reporting domestic abuse.

Nunlee faces charges of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and assault with intent to penetrate and misconduct in office, according to prosecutors.

The woman called 911, seeking help from police after reportedly being assaulted by her boyfriend. But while police responded to the domestic violence call, one of the officers allegedly took the woman into an upstairs bedroom and sexually assaulted her, authorities said.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said, “I’m troubled. Certainly, this is the type of criminal misconduct that should never happen by any member of this department, or any department for that matter.”

According to the prosecutor’s office, Nunlee took the woman upstairs and his partner stayed with the boyfriend downstairs. “It is alleged that when Nunlee was in an upstairs bedroom with the woman, he sexually assaulted her,” according to the prosecutor’s office. “While they were alone upstairs, Nunlee indicated he would be coming back to the house later at 7 a.m.”

Police said Nunlee did not return. According to the prosecutor’s office, the woman reported the alleged assault to police the next day.

Craig said the other officer at the scene did nothing wrong. He said that in domestic dispute situations, officers do keep parties at safe distance, but in this case, they were in different parts of the home. For officer safety, Craig said, “an officer should never lose line of sight of their partner.”

Craig was suspended without pay. In this case, it was also said that this was not a reflection of the department as a whole and is an isolated incident.
