There have been lots of things going on in the news that you may have missed. Check out these articles and make the task of reading news easier on yourself.
- Spike Video Game Awards were recently on and writer Samantha Allen explains wonderfully how harmful transgender jokes are. (*Content warming: transphobia)
Allen describes a joke that co-host Joel McHale says about Wario having “undergone sex reassignment surgery” and also describes the effects of saying such a politically ill-advised “joke”
“It not only repeats the exoticizing focus on transgender people’s genitals, it also casts transgender identity itself as something scandalous and laughable.
What you might not know is what it feels like to hear a joke like this, what it’s like to be triggered.”
Allen then explains a very personal experience before she transitioned.
- Bob Filner, ex-San Diego mayor spared jail sentence for the sexual harassment of 20 women.
Filner has been sentenced to three months of home confinement and three years probation. He pleaded guilty to one felony charge of false imprisonment and two misdemeanor charges of battery.
[One woman] filed a lawsuit against Filner and the city, claiming her boss asked her to work without panties, demanded kisses, told her he wanted to see her naked and dragged her in a headlock while whispering in her ear.
Melissa Mandel, San Diego’s deputy attorney, has called out Filner saying,
“Filner demeaned his victims. He humiliated them. He scared them. He embarrassed them. He sexualised and devalued them. And he did all of this with the power and influence of the public office he held.”
- From Huffington Post: Key Military Sexual Assault Reform Dropped from Defense Bill
The bill that is moving forward addresses the problem of sexual assault in the military. The bill will not include the amendment to remove military sexual assault cases from the chain of command which was added by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.).
“Congress has chosen to sidestep the most important military justice reform to come across its desk in history, once against leaving sexual assault victims devastated and betrayed by inaction,” said Anu Bhagwati, executive director of the Service Women’s Action Network and a former Marine Corp captain.
The bill would stop the overturn of jury convictions by military commanders, require civilian review if a case is declined by a commander, assign independent legal counsel to protect the rights of victims, mandate dishonorable discharges for anyone convicted of sexual assault, criminalize retaliation against victims who report sexual assault and eliminate the statue of limitations in rape/sexual assault cases.
Those are just three of the articles that I found interesting lately. Are there anything articles that you think should be shared?
