Problem for your reproductive rights: Crisis Pregnancy Centers

I know that I have already written once on the topic of reproductive rights about women, but I realized that I had left something out that is very important to this topic: Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs). These centers need to be addressed and I find it absolutely alarming the lack of information that is given about these “clinics.”
CPCs have been wearing a mask since the day of their creation. They prey on the women who are stuck in a very difficult situation: pregnant, and often times, with an unplanned pregnancy. The clinic uses its mask by pretending to be a clinic that’s goal is to assist women through a very difficult situation. These women are looking for information on what they can do as a next step, but more importantly, they are seeking help, whether physical or emotional. And these centers take full advantage of these women.
Women who have been to the centers describe being “harassed, bullied and given blatantly false information.” These centers have been reported to give incomplete information and often times incorrect information about all options such as abortion and adoption, they have tried to mislead people by showing false and exaggerated films and photos that keep a woman from choosing abortion, they have been reported to have lied about the emotional and medical effects of abortions, discourage certain methods of birth control and even tell women that they are not pregnant in order to trick them into continuing the pregnancy. ( On top of this, these fake clinics have fake health care providers who use false advertising.
Amanda Marcotte, a feminist blogger and writer, told a story of one girl’s unfortunately experience with a CPC. The CPC was located in a very close distance to a Planned Parenthood, where the 17-year-old girl thought she was going. Instead, the CPC took all of her personal information and exploited the young girl. When she came for her appointment, she was met with police who were told that a minor was being forced into an abortion. To make this event even more traumatic, the staff at the CPC followed with the “harassment by staking out the girl’s house, phoning her father at work and even talking to her classmates about her pregnancy, urging them to harass her (Full Frontal Feminism, p. 100).”
These clinics are a menace in today´s society and they harm the mentality of the women seeking help and are even exploiting them. The lack of information on these facilities is alarming and it must be out there for all to know about the dangers these “clinics” pose.
